Scottsdale Dentist Discusses Invisalign® and The Latest Digital Intraoral Scanning Technology

Dentist in Scottsdale discusses iTero® digital scanning technology and more discreet alternatives to traditional metal braces, including Invisalign® clear aligners.

Dr. Brandon Ryff, owner of Scottsdale Smile Center, discusses the newest iTero® Element™ 5D Intraoral Scanner, which replaces traditional impressions with a quick and easy digital scan for Invisalign® treatment—a discreet, comfortable, and convenient orthodontic alternative to traditional braces.

Scottsdale, AZ – With virtual meetings now more common than ever before, many people are noticing their smiles on camera, prompting them to consider orthodontic treatment. Oftentimes, those who could benefit from these treatments are deterred by the thought of having to wear prominent wires and brackets on their teeth. Adult patients are often particularly reluctant to pursue orthodontic treatment, as they worry that noticeable braces may cause disruptions in their professional or personal lives. Dr. Brandon Ryff and his associates—Dr. Don Chiappetti and Dr. Jonathan Coombs—at Scottsdale Smile Center are sympathetic to these concerns and believe that everyone deserves the confidence given by a healthy, beautiful smile. To this end, the doctors at Scottsdale Smile Center offer several alternative orthodontic options—including Invisalign® and/or porcelain veneers—that can provide a more comfortable, convenient, and discreet approach to treatment. The hope is that by offering these alternatives, high-quality orthodontic care can be made accessible to those who may otherwise avoid more aesthetically disruptive treatments.

Invisalign® treatment utilizes a series of custom-made removable, clear plastic aligners to gently and progressively address orthodontic concerns for a beautiful, long-lasting result. The aligners are made of a thin, flexible, high-quality plastic that is nearly invisible once it has been placed on the teeth. Furthermore, unlike traditional metal braces, which are firmly bonded to the teeth, Invisalign® aligners are designed to be removed while patients are eating, drinking, or performing their regular oral hygiene routine.

According to Dr. Ryff, Invisalign® treatment can help correct a range of orthodontic concerns, including gaps between the teeth, irregular spacing, overcrowding, and misaligned teeth. It can also address alignment issues, such as overbite, underbite, and crossbite. Invisalign® works by gradually and progressively shifting the teeth into the desired alignment using a sequential set of clear aligners. Each set is slightly modified from the previous one in order to continue gently repositioning the teeth and encouraging orthodontic improvement. Exact treatment times will vary, but on average, each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before being switched out for the next set in the series. This process continues until the desired alignment is achieved. Average treatment time is approximately 9 months, but some patients may require more or less time to obtain an optimal outcome.

The doctors at Scottsdale Smile Center are excited to announce that they have acquired the newest in cutting-edge dental technology, the iTero® Element™ 5D Intraoral Scanner. This technology has revolutionized dentistry, making Invisalign® treatments more convenient and streamlined than ever before. Both the Invisalign® clear aligner system and iTero® line of intraoral scanners were developed by Align Technology, and they are designed to be synchronous with one another. According to Dr. Ryff, the iTero® Element™ 5D eliminates the need for traditional impressions, which many patients relate as messy, bad-tasting, and uncomfortable. Instead, this new technology creates high-quality digital impressions of the teeth, gums, and other oral structures in just a few minutes. These digital files can then be instantly sent to the dental laboratory, where they are used to fabricate orthodontic aligners and retainers. Another feature of the iTero® Element™ 5D is the Invisalign® Outcome Simulator, which can help patients visualize their potential results and track their treatment progress. Dr. Ryff hopes that being able to see a simulated version of what their smile can look like will help patients remain motivated and engaged throughout the Invisalign® process.

The iTero® Element™ 5D also has the ability to scan internal tooth structure, which can help identify cavities in real time. Also, for purposes of tracking wear patterns of the teeth over time, this scanner can show precisely which teeth have changed and by how much, compared to the previous scan. This is particularly helpful for patients who think they may be grinding their teeth at night.

Dr. Ryff notes that while Invisalign® can often offer a more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing treatment experience, it may not be ideal for every case. Clear aligner systems are generally quite effective at correcting mild-to-moderate orthodontic problems, but may not be the best option for those experiencing more severe or complex alignment concerns. In these cases, traditional metal braces may still be required in order to provide optimal results. Alternatively, some patients may be able to achieve their desired results using cosmetic dentistry solutions, such as porcelain dental veneers. Veneers can help conceal gaps, chips, spaces, and other minor alignment issues using thin sheets of high-quality porcelain that are bonded to the fronts of the teeth. This application of veneers, sometimes referred to as “instant orthodontics,” can also be used to alter the color and shape of the teeth for a brighter, whiter, more uniform smile aesthetic. Furthermore, Dr. Ryff states that even patients who are not pursuing an Invisalign® treatment can benefit from the advanced imaging abilities of the iTero® Element™ 5D. The fully-digital impressions can provide increased accuracy and efficiency for a number of restorative, general, and cosmetic dentistry treatments—eliminating the traditional impressions of the past.

Ultimately, Dr. Ryff states that there are now more options available than ever when it comes to discreetly and comfortably addressing orthodontic concerns. In order to determine which option is best suited to them, he strongly recommends that patients consult with a qualified dental professional. From there, a comprehensive oral examination can be conducted and personalized treatment recommendations can be made based on the unique needs and goals of each patient.

Invisalign Vs. DIY Teeth Straightening

There have been many recent commercials and online advertisements for what’s known as “direct-to-consumer” options for teeth straightening. These do-it-yourself teeth alignment systems are designed for individuals to use at home, and often look similar to orthodontic appliances such as Invisalign®, which is the technique we offer here at Scottsdale Smile Center. We would like to take a moment to evaluate the many significant distinctions between Invisalign® and direct-to-consumer teeth straightening treatments, because these differences are very important when it comes to the treatment process and the potential results.

Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment that is only available by prescription. The entire process is developed and supervised by one of our experienced dentists, which allows the final outcome to be more accurately predicted. Some DIY teeth straightening options may not require ongoing, in-person treatment monitoring by a dental or orthodontic professional. This lack of real-time oral evaluations can be a disadvantage in terms of obtaining clear, professional examinations of how the orthodontic treatment process is progressing. Unforeseen challenges and inefficiencies can arise during the treatment process, and if they are not addressed quickly, it could have a pronounced effect on the results. In addition, Invisalign® is able to treat other orthodontic concerns—such as mild to moderate overbite, underbite, and crossbite issues—whereas a direct-to-consumer option may not be designed to correct those types of problems.

DIY teeth straightening systems typically offer several benefits that can sound very enticing, and it’s certainly understandable why individuals feel they may be more convenient. However, we believe that Invisalign® is the best option when compared to those treatments, particularly for patients who are experiencing “rotated” teeth and/or conditions such as infections and cavities that require regular evaluation during the orthodontic treatment process. Most orthodontic cases involve crowding or overlapping teeth, which almost always requires a very precise procedure to slightly slenderize the crowded teeth prior to attempting to move them. This procedure is what creates just the right amount of space, so there is room for the crowded teeth to move into proper alignment. DIY orthodontics not only lack the expert supervision of a dentist, but without this slenderizing process, most people end up being very unhappy with the results of DIY orthodontics. While DIY orthodontics may slightly improve alignment in a handful of cases, at the end of treatment, most patients find that their teeth are still crowded.

Ultimately, in-person customization of the treatment plan and consistent monitoring to ensure the treatment is progressing as smoothly and effectively as possible can make a world of difference once the results begin to become noticeable!

Discreet Orthodontic Treatment for Adults

The thought of having to wear prominent metal appliances on the teeth for an extended period of time often makes the prospect of orthodontic treatment unappealing to adults who wish to correct teeth misalignment. Fortunately, there have been many innovations over the years that make it possible for both adult and adolescent patients to resolve common orthodontic concerns without compromising smile aesthetics during the treatment process.

Our dentists at Scottsdale Smile Center offer two popular options that can correct the appearance of misalignment, crowding, excessive spacing, and other issues in the most discreet way possible:

Invisalign® is capable of straightening the teeth and even correcting mild to moderate bite irregularities without reliance on metal brackets and wires affixed to the teeth. Made of a translucent plastic material, Invisalign® is a flexible and removable orthodontic appliance designed to gradually correct misalignment by moving the teeth into a new position. The Invisalign® aligners are so thin and clear that it’s difficult to notice them when they are on the teeth, even at a close distance.

Porcelain Veneers
In some cases of teeth misalignment and crowding, ongoing orthodontic treatment may not be necessary. Cosmetic dental restorations such as porcelain veneers can be placed in areas exhibiting signs of spaces or a “crooked” appearance. These custom-designed restorations are attached to the front part of the teeth in the area targeted for treatment, and are color-matched to surrounding teeth to produce natural-looking results. In effect, porcelain veneers are able to “mask” certain types of orthodontic concerns and give the teeth a straighter, healthier look. These treatments typically require just two office visits and create results that can last years into the future.

In some cases, patients may choose to undergo a very short-term, limited Invisalign® treatment prior to receiving veneers. In many cases, going this route makes sense because it can reduce the number of veneers that may otherwise be necessary to achieve the same result. While not every patient is a candidate for this approach, many individuals appreciate a more conservative approach to treatment. Also, by reducing the number of veneers, sometimes Invisalign® treatment can reduce the overall, total treatment cost.

How Does Invisalign® Work?

The nearly invisible teeth straightening system known as Invisalign® can be an excellent option for many teens and adults seeking a discreet, more comfortable alternative to traditional metal braces. So how does this innovative orthodontic system work? Following an evaluation to determine if Invisalign® is right for you, Dr. Jonathan Coombs and Dr. Don Chiappetti – our experienced dentists – will design a series of customized, removable aligners that work to gently shift your teeth into the desired position over the course of the treatment process.

Once fabricated, you will need to wear each Invisalign® aligner approximately 20-22 hours a day for a recommended period of time before switching to the next aligner in your set. Throughout treatment, you will be asked to occasionally return to our office for check-ups to ensure everything is progressing as planned. These routine visits are generally less frequent and often considerably quicker than the check-ups usually required to adjust brackets and monitor the progression of metal braces.

Most patients are able to attain optimal results with Invisalign® within nine to twelve months, but some individuals have completed treatment in as little as six months. Ultimately, the length of your Invisalign® treatment will be dependent on your specific needs and desires, as well as how       good you are about wearing your aligners as directed by Dr. Chiappetti or Dr. Coombs.

Will Invisalign® Work for Me?

shutterstock_123746110Invisalign® can often be a great option for individuals who are interested in conveniently, comfortably, and discreetly straightening their teeth. This innovative alternative to traditional metal braces involves a customized series of clear aligners designed to gradually shift misaligned teeth into a more desirable position. As an added benefit, each aligner is removable, enabling patients to easily take them out for eating, drinking, oral hygiene, and other daily necessities.

In general, people who are considered good candidates for Invisalign® have one or more of the following concerns:

  • Gaps between the teeth
  • Overly crowded teeth
  • An overbite or underbite
  • A crossbite (due to jaw misalignment)

Ultimately, Invisalign® has proven to be an effective solution for straightening mild to moderate tooth misalignments in both teens and adults. If you are considering Invisalign®, one of our experienced dentists – Dr. Don Chiappetti and Dr. Jonathan Coombs – can determine whether or not this innovative orthodontic system would be right for you following a thorough evaluation. If it is decided that Invisalign® would not be the most effective technique for your needs and goals, our dentists can suggest a more appropriate treatments to help you achieve the smile you desire.
